Practice Emphasis
Donald L. Potts concentrates his practice in the area of local government law. Mr. Potts’ emphasis is on fire service law, pension law, public safety communications, school law, employment and labor law, and appellate law.
Representative Matters
Mr. Potts has represented clients both in state court and before administrative agencies. He has argued before the Illinois Appellate Court and has participated in several appellate matters. Mr. Potts advises clients in all aspects of local government law, including compliance with governing statutes, the Open Meetings Act, and the Freedom of Information Act. Mr. Potts’ experience includes representing and advising fire protection districts in all aspects of district operation, including the development of policies and procedures.
Publications and Presentations
While in law school, Mr. Potts was the Editor-in-Chief of the Northern Illinois University Law Review. Mr. Potts has written several articles for the firm newsletter, Legal Insights, The Fire Guard, and a Client Alert detailing issues arising when public employees are called to active military service. Mr. Potts has also delivered presentations on various topics including school law, military leave issues, and firefighter pension funds. Mr. Potts is the editor of the firm’s newsletter Legal Insights for Local Governments.
Professional Background
Mr. Potts served for over twenty years in the United States Army, Army National Guard, and currently is in the Army Reserve. He holds the rank of Major and has served on active duty in the Iraq war.
During law school Mr. Potts clerked for two years at Ottosen Britz Kelly Cooper & Gilbert, Ltd. After law school he served as a clerk for Justice Tom M. Lytton of the Illinois Appellate Court.
